Daimler Trucks Acquire Torc Robotics for its Self-Driving Tech

Largest truck manufacturer in the world has bought majority stake in self driving tech company torc robotics for implementing latter’s tech in their trucks. This move come as a part of broader push to develop autonomous vehicles.

Torc robotics will be providing 120 skilled staff to work on Daimler’s 4 level automation in their new range of trucks, Daimler Trucks Chief Executive Martin Daum said. Torc robotics has been innovating tech in self driving since 2005 and their tech seems to operate well under any weather and terrain.

“Bringing Torc Robotics within the Daimler Trucks family creates a unique and powerful team of innovators to put highly automated trucks on the road,” Daum said.

Daimler now offers 2 level automation in their trucks and are hopeful of upgrading their automation to level 4 with help of Torc.

“With the ever rising demand for road transportation, not the least through e-commerce, there is a strong business case for self-driving trucks in the U.S. market and I believe the fastest path to commercialization for self-driving trucks is in partnership with Daimler Trucks, the OEM market leader,” said Torc CEO Michael Fleming in a statement.

However, torc robotics will continue to develop and test its new self-driving software Asimov at its Blacksburg Virginia facility and will continue partnership with caterpillar for developing software for mining and agricultural applications.

Torc will work closely with developers of Daimler to implement a 4 level automation in the trucks.

“The ideal combination between Torc’s expertise on agile software development and our experience in delivering reliable and safe truck hardware.” Daum said.

Financial details of the deal were not disclosed. The acquisition will also need to receive regulatory approval from U.S. authorities.
